Patriotism for the Fourth of July! Dear all, On July 1, World Have Your Say had a show asking: Does patriotism poison politics? One guest was Roger Neil from the National Museum of Patriotism. The host asked him to define patriotism.
Roger's answer is only somewhat coherent: it reminds me of Stephen Colbert. I edited together his response into a 2:30 .mp3: WHYS-Patriotism.mp3. (The full, unedited show can be found at bbc.co.uk.)
This 2:30 clip shows how patriotism poisons politics: people rely on symbols more than on actions.
Happy July 4, everyone.

The Great Job Hunt I think I most likely have a job with the South Everett Goodwill now. Just gotta wait for the background check to go through and they'll give me a call.
I don't wanna work there, but I have to. Material Handling. That means I go out back and pick up donations people leave, then sort it all. It sounds like a job made of suck. Can't I just process pictures for the rest of my life? It'd be nice. At least until I could open my gaming shop. Gah. Ah well. I need the moneys.Powered by ScribeFire.

Hair Restoration FOR THE EMPORER!!!!! "Has the vile forces of Nurgle Taken away your hair? Purge the heretic! With just for Space Marines:"
No, this banner ad is NOT clickable but it IS a real ad. I did NOT photoshop it. I glanced at my inbox and there it was.
Note the symbol on the guys shirt. Its an Imperial Eagle from the Space Marines/Imperial Guard in Warhammer 40,000.
So basically, this ad tells us that all Warhammer nerds are balding and should think about getting hair replacement surgery....

Tricks in the Process Not that this is the first time this has ever happened to me (not by a long shot), but it's always a bit strange whenever I get to the end of writing a chapter only for the story to tell me, "No, that chapter can't end there. You need to have another scene, first."
See, that's the trick, aspiring writers: you're not making the story up; you're just telling it as it happens.

What's the Haps? So we wound up seeing 'The Happening' last night - sorry guys, your dire warnings came too late!
The movie itself was forgettable but the situation was awesome: Joe and I were literally the ONLY people in the cinema. We sat in the exact middle prior to the start of the film and speculated about the myriad of creepy things that could happen to two people alone in a giant darkened room designed to seat hundreds.
As to the movie, we can get enjoyment out of almost anything. There were a couple of genuinely creepy moments. Shyamalan is a decent director, he's just a crappy screenwriter. Although I did notice one particular shot stolen straight from Spielberg.
Mark Wahlberg's acting is getting worse at he gets older, what's with that? He was AWFUL, completely wooden. Don't even get me started on the woman playing his wife.
The film felt under-developed... underwhelming in general. At home in bed afterwards, Joey and I dissected it and compared to 'War of the Worlds' and 'The Mist' - two other films with very similar setup and structure - and discussed why those films worked and this one didn't. In a way, I'm really glad we decided to see it - a good film would have been nice, but this one gave us great fodder for a discussion on filmmaking.
In other news, my neck is killing me, Joe and I are visiting my mum this weekend, we got a free Indian lunch at work again yesterday (go work!!) and some sort of tax law change in the new financial year has translated into me getting an additional $30 per pay. How awesome is that?

Go Dad! Go Mallards! And...CVG2008 Settling in nicely at CONvergence, thank you very much.
I've had many Big Worries weighing on me, recently. The main worry for today has thankfully now passed: I just got a call from England telling me my dad came through knee replacement surgery very well indeed.
My dad is an ex-Marine, and has possibly the highest pain tolerance of anyone I've ever known, so when he says it was painful, I'm assuming it was the kind of thing that would leave me a gibbering wreck, had I gone through it.
So, hey, if you're reading this, why not leave my Dad a "get well soon" message in the Comments section. After all, he is halfway responsible for my being here (life-wise and cartoon-wise, not CONvergence-wise, that is). I know it'd really cheer him up, getting get-wells from around the world. And it'd make my day, too!
Thanks a million! (And, it goes without saying, those of you fortunate enough to still have your dads around, go tell 'em how much they mean to you, even a fortnight after Fathers' Day).
****
Went out to dinner last night with cajones, chebutykin, princeofcairo, and mollpeartree. We hit a place downtown called "Ike's Food and Cocktails."
Much cool, fun food was consumed. Case in point: Lobster Corndogs.
I'd say more about the rest of the food, but after "Lobster Corndogs," what's left to say, really?
****
Speaking of cajones, here's the Guest of Honor badge he created for me.

Did I mention cajones rocks? Hard?
****
My pal alexbot3000 visited over the weekend. We dragged him and his wife, Kristen, to a Madison Mallards game, where Alex threw out the first pitch in front of a crowd of about 6,000, and the Mallards then proceeded to get spanked, 14-2.

Video of Alex's throw DOES exist. It WILL be posted! Bwa-ha-ha!
Nevertheless, a terrific time was had, and the Mallards are in the thick of the pennant race, still. If they win both games of their double-header tonight, or if they win one, and the Wisconsin (Wausau) Woodchucks lose, they'll be first-half champions, and gain entry to the Northwoods League playoffs later this summer. So I'm wearing my Mallards gear around CONvergence. I even briefly contemplated popping 60 miles south, down to Rochester tonight, to see the Honkers play the St. Cloud River Bats (the theory being, it's better to see some Northwoods baseball than none when your team's in the thick of the hunt).
But that would mean leaving CONvergence immediately after the opening ceremonies, and for goodness sakes, there are cabana parties to check out!
Cabana Parties: the Lobster Corndog of the convention scene.
Now...GO MALLARDS! And...GET WELL SOON, DAD!
Update - Dad's doing great, is now sleeping, and the Mallards are up 6-2 in the 5th inning of the first of a doubleheader...they've got the bases loaded, one out, and just scored two runs! Thank the Flying Spaghetti Monster for international calling plans and internet radio...

It's either entirely innocent or entirely wicked, and I'm not quite sure
which.
The Seductive Whispering in the Shadows
I scouted -- I hunted -- I flew over the quadrangle -- I saw my prey
leaving Sprowlween Hall -- I circled -- I descended -- I pounced!
Me:"Good morning, Mynthë!"
Mynthë:"Good morning, Sythyry. I was wondering whether I'd
scared you off."
Me:"After one has been killed by a nendrai, lesser perils hold
little terror. Indeed, the prospect of inviting a sweet friend to spend
the late afternoon utterly fails to chill my blood any-the-more."
Mynthë:"Wait ... Vae killed you?"
Me:"No, not Vae. A male N. Violens, off in the Nereidscray.
Named Llethillasessat."
Mynthë:"How did that happen?"
So I got to boast at zir for a bit, and get interrogated with questions about
nendrai territoriality and romance which, despite watching Vae and Lleth, I
mostly didn't know the answer to. A third of an hour later...
Me:"Late afternoon is Orren-only hour at Beelbarrel Pond. "
Mynthë:"Oh?"
Me:"Let's go!"
Mynthë:"But it's Orren-only hour ... oh. OH!
"
Me:"Yes -- that kind of Oh!"
Mynthë:"Both of us?"
Me:"Absolutely!"
Mynthë:"Wonderful!"

![[User Picture]](http://p-userpic.livejournal.com/37400399/4695596) [Link] | My folks drove down to Frankenmoth (or however you spell it), and we picked up Sabrina. It was great to have her again - although we watched the CD full of pictures and she probably had a better time than we did. She found a lovely green stone while looking for Petoskey stone; she helped cut and polish it with her Grandpa. It was wrapped and made into jewelry for me. wow. Not sure what kind of stone it is - my Mom says it's wonderstone.
We stopped by Hot topic cause I saw this lady with a fabulous bag at the con. It was all fish bone design and I loved it. The manager did a search for it on their system and came up empty. I've done a computer search and can't find it. Who ever you are - I am envious.
I lost my little purse lamb from the Denver zoo. She fell off on Sunday getting out and I should have known better. I don't think she'll be amongst the stuff, so my little lamb is lost. I'll try to see if my zoo has the little darlings.
While I've re-ordered my life, there is still many things I have to get done in order to feel caught up. Bills, Groceries, Sugar Gliders.
While at AC, Dave was photographed for a potential article for National Geographic. How cool.

Moofies I need a reality break, so Joe and I are going to a late movie tonight. Only problem is that there are no late showings of Prince Caspian - which we still haven't seen - so our choices are limited to The Hulk or The Happening.
On one hand, The Hulk went down well with critics and the Happening... didn't. On the other hand I don't think I'm in the mood for an action flick. But on the hypothetical THIRD hand, I'd take Edward Norton over Mark Wahlberg any day. Decisions...

McCain Repackaged
So there I was, surrounded by at least a hundred Drazis, and I couldn't find my w'tsai. Oh wait, wrong story.
So there I was, at the local Ralphs (Krogers elsewhere), buying water and other beverages. I was casing the Ben & Jerry's freezer ($2.50 a pint is a darn good price, non?) and happened to glance at the DVD rack thoughtfully placed in the middle of the aisle (not isle). I examined the cover art of various DVDs and noticed this:

Hmmmm, the blurb says "based on the memoir by John McCain and Mark Salter". It's an A&E production and it focuses on the 5 years McCain spent as a Vietnam POW. Scott Glenn plays McCain Senior. Wow. The DVD was released in 2005. It's now 2008 and the studio has decided to create a cardboard sleeve to go over the DVD case. Check this out:

I saw what you did there! :D
It's now "based on the best-selling memoir". And it's being touted as "the true story of JOHN MCCAIN". And there's a nice big American flag. How festive!! :D
I love marketing...

The Return of the English Muffin A few weeks ago I was at the supermarket and I saw a pack of Thomas' English Muffin's emblazoned with the words "Now High Fructose Corn Syrup Free!". A little shocked that the product would even contain the noxious substance, I read the ingredients and saw 'sugar' there. Hm, learn something every day.
Now, back when I was a single-digit schooler, I recall eating these things from time to time and enjoying them, and then one day, sometime in the '80s, they became "sour". I'd buy them on occasion, somehow recalling I used to eat them, and being put off by the sour taste. I just chalked it up to it being how they taste and guessing it was me or something.
Of course, I decided to purchase these "improved" muffins. Was I in for a shock. It was how they tasted, and it wasn't me - it was them. Gone was any sourness or aftertaste (where have I heard that before...), the product was pure "bread flavor" - this must be what I ate thirty-some years ago and kept me buying a bag-box again and again every couple years or so wondering... Well I wonder no longer, I've bought more in the past month than I probably did since 2000.

Psalm 139: 9-14 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,"
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
(Thank-you for all you have given me, both during your life and after the sun set on your time! I can never be with you like I was when you were still alive, but it's nice to have your help in what ever form you can give. I miss you, Lisa!)

Incremental Work, Incremental Mekton, and Party Plans
- Made very minor progress on homework. This needs to be drastically improved, ASAP.
- Made incremental progress on the (informal) talk I'm supposed to give tomorrow at lunch time. I'll probably have an outline by then, but not slides with figures. So, it'll be a whiteboard talk.
- Continued running numbers for destroyer-scale weapons in a giant robot, under the Mekton system. For aggregate firepower per unit cost, you're better off just using robot-scale weapons. This is even true factoring in range (it costs less to boost robot weapons to corvette-weapon ranges than to use corvette-scale weapons). Where corvette-scale weapons win is ability to deliver enough damage to swamp armour protection. Doing the same at robot scale requires using armour-piercing shells and several linked guns, which ends up costing about double what the equivalent corvette-scale weapon costs. So, an interesting tradeoff. This also explains why "close-in defense systems" are popular (small guns to shoot at small targets, big guns for hard targets).
- The next game day conflicts with my first choice for birthday party days. So, I'm attempting to hold my birthday party this Saturday, with the usual Sunday lunch trip being the fallback option if this falls through, or an alternate venue for people who can't make Satuday. We'll see how this goes. I still haven't confirmed that Saturday is doable, and I still have to contact guests to see who can show up. I have about a week's less notice than I'd have liked. But, things should work out.
Now, puttering and bed.

Last night we went to Summerfest, mostly just to do it, not to see any band in particular. We browsed a few bands, listened to a few songs, did a lot of walking in beautiful weather and ate a lot of unhealthy food. There are worse ways to spend a summer evening.
This weekend portends not one but two cookouts, and lots of time with neighbors and friends. Probably a few fireworks over the lake as well.

RIP NES (1987-2008) Farewell, old friend:

The life of my first Console gaming system, a Ninetendo Entertainment System has come to an end today, the second of June of 2008 or atleast it's limping on Life support enough that it's time to pull the plug after 21 years.
I got the NES deck when I was five years old. It was the first thing I had ever saved up for (with parents help of course. I'm sure I really only donated like 2.50 cents out of a piggy bank and my parents really bought it for me but you know the feeling). A LOT of memories here.
The system has been dying over the last year, I could get it to work, with some effort. Now no matter what I do and which game I play, it will work for about five to ten minutes then start to get corruption on the display (theres a term for this, I forgot what it is, where you get random numbers in the place of things, etc) and will shortly thereafter hardlock. I've done pretty much everything I can do to clean it; there might be a way to repair it but since I don't have any real electronics knowledge past the component level well... this isn't very likely for me.
I know what people are going to say, Emulation. But it's just... not the same. There are still a number of NES units in circulation. Alas I am broke
Edit: Good news! Looks like this is only a temporary setback! A RL friend of mine says he has an NES deck I can have that he hasn't used in years because he lost the AC adapater and controllers for it! Works for me! I'll be picking it up from him tommorow ^.^
