Why Tony Stark is the better Hero

Tony Stark is atypical of the Superheroes that are shown on the screen. Tony Stark has a lot of character flaws, but his character strength is Responsibility. No other character in recent memory has shown such a sense of responsibility as Tony Stark does.

Hellboy and Spiderman come close. They tend to want to do the right thing. However, they don't do it for themselves. They do it in memory of past people. The X-men don't do it for themselves, either. They act the way they do to honor Professor Xavier. To be completely honest, Prof. X is not really altruistic either. He does it so that he doesn't have to fight with anyone. In a way, Charles Xavier constantly lives in irony.

Ben of the Fantastic Four I think is the only other person who I can point to and say "He's Responsible". He does the right thing because he wants to do the right thing. Maybe it's a bit selfish, as he desperately wants to prove he isn't a monster, but he proves time and again that he is willing to put others before himself.

Tony takes the point of view that he is responsible for the damage that was done in his name. He doesn't blame other people. He takes personal account for it, and he does something about it. If he fails, he fails trying. In the movie, it is demonstrated time and again, he holds others peoples lives as valuable, and knowing he can do something, he does it. Very few characters really do that. Batman defiantly doesn't. Superman does it as an afterthought. The X-men avoid it whenever possible.

I think this really is what separates a lot of the Avengers from the rest of the Marvel Universe. While not everyone on their roster has the sense of Responsibility (And the bullheadedness) of Tony Stark, they have enough, and it shows.

Interesting; I had not thought about that.

One of the reasons a lot of characters are Responsible because of their memories of past people is that it makes for a quick and easy way of introducing their motivation. Spiderman didn't do all he could have done, feels ashamed because a Loved One Dies, so of course he does more now: obvious. Spiderman comes out of nowhere with this sense of Responsibility nobody else in his world seems to have.. a lot harder to explain.

Haven't seen the new Ironman movie, but look forward to it. Once it's out on DVD...

I disagree about the X-Men. Colossus is like Superman in that partly due to upbringing, he Does the Right Thing. I think he would work for mutant rights even if he weren't a mutant and an X-Man.

Hellboy comes across as a lot more responsible in the comics. This isn't Professor Bruttenholm's fight, this is his. He can't chop off the right hand of doom, because someone else might get it. People constantly want him to rule over all the witches or end the world and he's the one who gets thumped when he says no. This is the character who got Abe out of the hands of the BPRD scientists and who left the BPRD when they tried to booby-trap Roger.
