Naming is hard...|
So... I've been thinking about making a big step. Almost everyone in my life nowdays calls me Sarah, but that's not really my name, that's my SL character. I need to be thinking of moving forward. I need to find a new name I can live with.
I make this a little harder on myself because I want my initials to stay the same. I have artwork under my initials. I would like to keep the artwork that I've done in my life to continue to be in my life (A reminder plug, my tumblr is theartofkensanoni.tumblr.com . Come find me for all the new Pastel work I've been doing!)
I have already decided my new middle name. That was easy. I think everyone would approve.
This leaves me with J's. The three rules are, 1) It can't be seen as a boy's name, as fuck mislabelling. 2) I gotta like it and recognize that people are talking to me. 3) It can't be Jennifer. That's already taken, and I don't need a reason for Jennifer to hate me.
The following is a list of possible names I find acceptable.
I'd not like to make this decision completely alone... does anyone (who is even still reading this) have any thoughts?
One more time around the sun, please.|
Ex Machina thoughts.|
Well, here I am...|
Currently I am in the Seattle Area. It appears I popped up just in time for the local gaming convention, which makes me regret leaving behind all my Magic Cards.
I've yet to do much exploring. The thing that marvels me about the area is how much Water is everywhere. It's just like sploosh! Water! In Rivers and streams and things! It's completely and totally alien to me. I am sure I am okay with it, but it makes me wonder.
I need to go and visit things, but at the moment, my goals is to continue doing some work that my company previous did... and I need a place outside that I can go and do art at, because I don't think I can get anything done where I am currently staying.
If anyone has any suggestions on cool places to visit while I am up here, please let me know.
I know it's been a while... and for now I live...
but I feel like I'm going to be beyond screwed really soon, and in case I disappear off all other media, I want you to know I still think about everyone here...
... and maybe I'll start thinking about posting from the Dreamwidth, too... but I am just really lost.
Positive Thought for the Day|
Continuing a conversation|
Because Dreamwidth is being a D*** right now...|
I'm still working on the Chinese Zodiac Calander project, but I need to take a day off because I am emotionally horrible right now. If you haven't looked at it, check out my Tumblr feed here. http://theartofkensanoni.tumblr.com/
I need to feed in some money to have a prettier page outside of just plain white...
I am a mess inside right now. I'm not sure what is even safe to talk about anymore.
Be good to people. That's all I want to say. It's hard. I know it's really hard... but even the people that probably deserve bad things happening to them got problems, too...
I'll figure a way to cross post eventually, but here is my Tumblr, for those that don't know. http://theartofkensanoni.tumblr.com/
Alternatives to Facebook|
I've reached the point of frustration. I would just like a Social Website to not try to screw me over every time I look around. I *need* personal identity Aliases. It's how I identify with my fan bases, it's how I identify myself as a person. I am not my Birth Name, not really. It's a name I use because Mundane People understand it. I need my fan names. I need my artistic name. I not want to agree to screwing myself over because you can't agree to your own TOS, Facebook. I am done with the Shifting Of Ownerships.
.... So, does anyone else have any suggestions (And if you are still here to talk to, bless you all) of where to go, that is a) Socially active, b) TOS friendly, and c) semi-relveant? I need FB because of Family, but I need a better Social Network, both for my friends and my artwork.
I'm not a werewolf... I'm not a werewolf...
It's okay to be a wereeolf. It's up to you to be a monster.
So, here we are again|
I'm back at Kaiser, again. Right now, I am sitting outside, while my father goes under the knife for preventive surgery for a Hernia. It should be pretty quick, and we'll be heading home after surgery.
It's petty, but I am tired, and I'm sure my papa is double, although he gets a nap while under, I suppose. I am not a morning person by nature, and I like taking cat naps while traveling, but I don't really get a chance to, and I didn't get to bed early by necessity, so I am pretty up and slightly cranky. I need more than four hours sleep on a typical day, and I'm not going to get it today.
This Kaiser has a very small Farmer's Market. Strawberries and Cherries and Raspberries are currently in season, and there's a vendor specializing in curry and Mid-Asian cuisine, which is neat. There is also the temptation of Macaroons. I do love my coconut cookies.
Overall, I'm doodling and waiting. I don't expect any real issues or complications from this. I'll let people know how things are going.
Well, that could have gone better|
So. I'm working as an independent researcher for the moment. Today was the first day, and things that could go wrong have. I got off at the wrong courthouse. I struggled for half a hour on the wrong form. My laptop ran out of juice with no place to charge it up. The right side is that I'm a third thru the assignment already, so I should only have a day's worth of work left to do on this weeks Chore. Once I find a place to power up I should be golden.
I do believe I am allergic to cleaning. My. Nose will not stop. I am miserable.
The problem. Being Treated Like A Lady|
Spoken from the Never Can Get It In Gear Trans...
You know, I get. I do. Women want to be respected, they want to feel special, they want to not worry to death about men all the time. I completely understand.
My problem is that they want the manners that kept them oppressed to go along with it. Which by proxie, has men expecting that women should do all the things that make women oppressed. Which, of course, they've been trained to see as just Polite, and not what it is.
Artifacts of the Slavery of Women.
It's got to stop. Men need to stop expecting that women get to be treated as property because they followed rules that they don't understand, and women need to stop expecting fake politeness for the sake of their self worth. We're way past the point where Chilvery should have been artifacted away. We are way past the point that we should demand conventions based on sex. We should be past this.
We're not. Men are to blame. They perpetuate the princess cycle. They perpetuate the need to make women 'theirs'. Men act aggressively when they feel all their efforts fail. The teaching of the behaviors has to stop. It just has to. We've reached a point in our culture where neither sex trusts each other. The fact that love, lasting or temp, still happens boggles my mind.
I mean, I know the rules aren't fair, but quite frankly, it's not the woman's fault. She has to protect herself... but she also needs to realize that holding up the chains that made her a slave, and demanding that they be brandished around to make her feel good, is a horrible thing to do.
There is a world of difference between wanting to be possessed by someone, and demanding the conventions from people who have not earned the right to be with you, and you should never, ever, let those conventions get in the way of having true respect.
Asking Questions and listening to the echo....|
Brief asking of Thoughts Here. If you were to compare Princess Films (Broadly catagorized as Films (Animated or Not) where Girl Is In Plot Where She Must Fall In Love) from before the Disney Renaissance Period (Early 90's), and After, are there any changes to how they are portrayed, and if so, what changes to character design do you notice most?
Bonus Question: Do Miyazaki's works qualify for the discussion, or do they
just surpass all of them, because Miyazaki does it for his daughters, and therefore even Mononoke Hime and Nassuica are not actually Princess Films.
RWBY - Better than I could have dreamed|
It took me a while to get around to watching this. The original trailer really intrigued me, but it took a while for the show to be released. I watched it over the weekend.
Holy crap! I know they blended several tools together, but composing the whole thing in Poser boggles my mind. I had a hand at playing with an early build of Poser, and I don't know if the tool improved, but being able to do any of this in it really is impressive to me. It's bueatiful on that level.
The story/world building itself is at least entertaining. The Monster Hunting weapons are fun, the big action sequence is really satisfying, and the Student Drama sections are at least passable. It's been really entertaining. I hope they do get through and finish the second season.
And the *ear worm* that is the opening song is really good. We have a Soprano who you don't lose to being airy, it keeps the kind of pacing and rifting of J-Rock openers without being too corny, and the lyrics are pretty solid if you really are into Fantasy RPG type stuff.
Seriously, I didn't expect anything this good from Rooster Teeth. Ever. It's really worth checking out their youtube channel
Pirate Themed Party Food Ideas.|
Liver Patte on Cracker with Mustard - The Yellow Bellied Liver Lover.
SwordFish is the Sword Fighitng Fish, of course.
Hush Puppies are Cannon Balls.
Linguini with Cream Sauce and Small Bagette - Swabbing the Deck
Brownie with Sculpted Skull and Candy Bones - The Jolly Roger
A long fried Wonton Wraper, with sauce on one side, and a pile of Chicken A La King on the other side - La King the Plank.
I'm sure more will come to me.
I want to run a Japanese Game so badly right now... but...|
I'm not sure if I feel like going down and waiting at GK tonight, for a group that may or may not exist, for it hasn't responded to the posted ad, and for a shop that will shunt the RP'ers into a place that they can't be seen.
On a more complex level, I'm still trying to get a solid good idea for the Fate Core system, which after playing with dice seems to be a lot more of a player hostile system than it first appears. Success numbers are really fixed, and there is not as much room for forgiveness in FATE than there is in Storyteller. It pretty much is spend points or fail if you try something hard, and that worries me.
Actually, what worries me is that I have been trying to make characters based on well established characters from TV series, and I've been drawing blanks. The high concepts don't cover enough, the troubles for some characters are just hard to settle down on, and I worry that taking Approaches or setting up skills is... not enough. Like the points are aimed low and should be aimed higher.
At first, I worried about the compel system, and while I still am mindful that I need to be mindful of it, it feels like the main mechanic of the game. You probably could ditch the dice, rely purely on Fate Points, and end up with about the same system.
Running this cold, with a bare idea of a Mystery, sounds like a horrible idea to me, and it's bugging me that i can't get excited about this game. This game should be exciting. It's like I'm approaching the game wrong.
I seriously need a group to play this with before I run it with the public. I need to know if I'm not wasting people's time with this.
Because it makes me feel good...|
Okay, yeah... it uses way too many orchastra hits... it uses the inception sound... but darn it, It makes me feel like I'm flying through the Canyons of Mars. (Bonus points to those that know the reference)http://youtu.be/pKv_wua6kFE
Yeah, this is because I'm interested in Oscar songs...
.. However, Disney tends to do one of these sequences for all their musicals, and it's always neat to hear practically the whole world in one song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC83NA5tAGE&feature=share
[Art] How to Succeed as an Artist|
Not Able to Sleep PBP rant...|
I have never had a good experience with Play by Post, ever. I've wanted to. There are times where I am really optimistic that this time, it'll be different, but no. Every single time it is disappointment. It basically runs down to three factors.
1)You don't get to do cool stuff because time has to be frozen for things you are not involved in.
This is a primary one. If there is a combat somewhere in the PbP, then you aren't actually allowed to move time forward. This happened to me in one game, new character, I get the only one clue of what might be going on from the GM, and I go there, and I'm not allowed to investigate the scene where I went to, because over at this other section, there is a Battle going on. So instead of being able to actually do anything, I just sit there for over a week of real time, waiting and poking the DM to throw me a bone. While I get to interact with a new PC, they don't have anything to connect up with my character at all, and they can't do anything either.
It's just not cool to have other people be doing the cool stuff, and leaving other people out in the dark.
2) You don't get to do what you're interested in, because the DM doesn't care.
This one Exalted game, which no one would tell me what was going on so I could build an approriate character, I decided that I would play the Batman style character. I generated this Page long background (something I don't do because... you know... the DM doesn't care) explaining that I'm an enforcer, I hunt down viruses, and I'm in the world to stop a virus from spreading into the real world.
However, the DM needed me to be this diplomatic type for this other diplomat no one told me anything about... and so my stealth based assassin type build, completely useless. Furthermore, because the PC who I was suppose to be helping had quit the game over a month ago, I was being steered by the DM into helping a non-existent plot. So I spent three weeks, established my own character and handed the DM a story and plot to play with, and not have it matter.
3) You're screwed because the DM doesn't look at your character sheet.
In just about every game, no one has ever paid attention to the type of character I am playing. Playing a Merchant? Great, it's a combat game. Playing a Combat Monster, great. It's a Diplomacy game. Playing an Investigator? Boring, not allowed. Every Freaking Time. You would think that the PBP environment would all be about personal stories and getting plots customized to your characters, but forget that noise! You'll just do whatever the DM wants, because, you know, that has nothing to do with what you are actually doing or not doing.
4) You don't get to do anything, because the DM's doesn't give enough world information.
There was this one game where this person built their own world, and gave a loose description of what the world was about, but there was so much information missing, and that the DM tried to shotgun and punish players for not knowing about, that everyone left the game immediately. It might not have even been a bad game, but because the DM didn't communicate with people beforehand, no one wanted to dance through the mess.
I bring all this up, because someone was talking about having me run a 13th age game online, using Voip. I'm not sure I really want to, partly because I'm *really* bad at maintaining a scheduled game, and partly, because every experience with online play outside of one on SL was just bad. That one good game, died halfway through the first adventure.
I just don't think it's worth my time, and that makes me sad.
Maybe breaking out of Art Burn Out?|
I doodled a cartoon zebra today... without having to get energy to do so...
Maybe I'm able to do art again. I'd like to think so.
The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug - My one true gripe|
Okay... I'm peeved now.
Below is the link to the illustration. It is one of about 3 or 4 defining poster images of the Death of Smaug. ( How can you mess this up?Collapse )http://talesfromthecards.wordpress.com/2013/07/11/surviving-the-battle-of-lake-town/
[Art] Nine Lives 1 Partial|
I'm learning a language in all the wrong ways, really. I am learning to write words that are important to me, without any context. I am doing it because I find the characters pretty and elegant. I plan on doing 8 more of these, and trying to make better characters each time.
Lesson of the day, use a round brush! .... which, of course, means I'm going to have to really invest on getting a much large round. *sigh* Brushes are expensive.
Honeybee by Steam Powered Giraffe|
Take a few moments to watch this, if you will.|
It's about hacking, and mainly what people are after, and what it does. It doesn't go into great depth, but it is informative about lots of little things.
Now You See Me is a complicated film. I don't know if I would recommend it. However, it's not because I believe the film is bad. I think it's brilliant, but lazy.
Unlike The Presitge, which is about a conflict with two magicians with a Sci-Fi twist, this ends up being a story about Revenge that is drapped with The Caper trappings, with Four Magicians being the focus.
The reason it's horrible as a Mystery, is that the clue to who the person who organized the capers was really, really bad, obscure, and completely counter intuitive. As such, the whole audience is deceived into believe it's a caper film till about two thirds of the way through the film, if they were paying attention.
So, instead, it tries to play the ending off as a Thriller, but by the time you get to the ending, you don't care. The question of "Why" gets answered, but because we don't know *who* is out to get revenge, we don't care that they do. When the big secret is revealed at the end, we are like "What?' and then... well... we don't see the matchup, really.
The whole film gets so caught up in the Magician Distraction trope, that it messes itself up on the payoff because of that.
Now if you know me, I really like Magican Stories, because they remind me of my Grandfather, and as a Magician Film, this one stinks. The over reliance of CGI to create tricks that are to wow the audience does not impress me. Some zombie wires over a girl so she can be lifted over an audience in a CGI balloon does not impress me. Using the CGI to create editing tricks for a materialization comes off as cheap and unprofessional. Was there some real tricks? Yes. The close up artist they got at least know their stuff, and the opening Glass Box scene was really good and showy, and I can see someone really doing the trick. I won't even judge it that much.
However, this show never, EVER was about the magic, and that was the biggest disappointment of them all. You see some standard routines, some CGI trickery, and that's it. The Prestige, even with the Sci Fi element added in, was a lot more satisfying.
Honestly, this is a middle of the roader, and probably worth nothing more then a rental. It's honest fun, the story itself isn't bad, but you don't realize what story it is till about halfway through the film, and it's prologue could have been much stronger.
